In October 2024, The Unity Council entered into an exclusive option agreement to acquire a 1.35-acre site at the intersection of 29th Street and Fairmount Avenue in Oakland’s Adams Point neighborhood.The site is currently occupied by a 23,000-square-foot religious facility that houses the Oakland Peace Center, a nonprofit community center inspired by members of the previous congregation.
As church membership has declined and the building has deteriorated in condition, the remaining congregation views the future affordable housing development as the church’s enduring legacy — one that honors its history of community service and inclusivity.
The proposed development will deliver approximately 94 units of permanently affordable housing for households earning up to 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI), with a dedicated set-aside for formerly homeless residents. The project will also include ground floor community-serving space, including a childcare center, resident services offices, and Unity Council administrative offices. Resident amenities will feature a central courtyard, outdoor play space for childcare, on-site laundry, a community room, and wraparound supportive services.
