(Fruitvale – Oakland, CA) — The Unity Council was founded in 1964, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, to support families facing barriers to opportunity—and that mission remains as urgent today as it was then. We firmly believe that every person—no matter their background or circumstance—deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported.
Yesterday’s incident involving Senator Alex Padilla—who was removed, restrained, and handcuffed while seeking information about federal immigration enforcement—deeply troubled us. Attempts to silence leaders who advocate for our communities are unacceptable.
We are already hearing from families, students, and seniors in our neighborhoods who are afraid to leave their homes, go to work, or take their children to school. The psychological and emotional toll of aggressive enforcement actions is profound. We are witnessing heightened fear, stress, and anxiety across Fruitvale and throughout Oakland.
These actions disrupt daily life and threaten the health, education, and economic stability of entire households.
We stand in unwavering solidarity with Senator Padilla. In moments like this, we must rise together to defend the dignity and voice of every member of our community. As we continue our work, we condemn any use of force that seeks to suppress those who advocate for justice and accountability.
The Unity Council remains committed to protecting the rights, dignity, and well-being of all people. In this pivotal moment, we call on leaders and community members alike to stand united in defense of our shared values.
