Jan. 22, 2025 – Oakland, CA – The Unity Council, which has supported Latino families and residents in Oakland and the Bay Area for more than 60 years, brought together community leaders, residents, and elected officials to announce new resources and protections for immigrant families in the wake of the inauguration of President Trump, who has promised “mass deportations” of residents.
Chris Igesias, the CEO of The Unity Council, led the call to action. “I want to make sure one message rings clear today: Oakland is united today. We are well prepared. We will protect our immigrant families and we will continue to thrive, no matter who is President or what challenges lay before us.”
Iglesias pointed residents to the Unity Council website, where residents can find a list of resources – from legal representation to healthcare and housing support – as well as a donation button to support families and those services.
Iglesias and The Unity Council were joined in solidarity by partner organizations, Centro Legal de La Raza, La Clínica de La Raza, Oakland Unified School District, and Resilient Fruitvale.
Elected officials also spoke in support including Oakland Mayor Kevin Jenkins, City Council President Noel Gallo, Alameda County Supervisors Nikki Fortunato Bas, Lena Tam and Elisa Márquez, CA. State Sen. Jesse Arreguín, with representatives from the Offices of Congresswoman Lateefah Simon and Assemblymember Mia Bonta.
Iglesias made clear with resources and support, immigrant families and undocumented residents could find trusted partners through The Unity Council. “We want our residents to live well prepared and not scared,” he said. “The outpouring of support and solidarity among our partner organizations, our local elected officials, and our community ensures our residents can live free and without fear.”
