California’s Eviction Moratorium Ends September 30th

October 1, 2021

The California Eviction Moratorium is set to end this month. At the moment, we don’t know if it will be extended. We know that many families may have questions about what to do and where to find help if this protection ends. However, the Alameda County Moratorium continues, so renters will continue to be protected.

In a press release, Centro Legal de la Raza states:

Tenants in Alameda County will continue to be protected from most evictions under the Alameda County Eviction Moratorium beyond September 30, 2021. While statewide protections under AB 832 against non-payment evictions end on September 30, 2021, local protections continue to protect Alameda County tenants. The Alameda County Eviction Moratorium will continue for 60 days after the local public health emergency is declared over. As of now, the local public health emergency is on-going. The Alameda County Eviction Moratorium protects tenants from ALL evictions except those based on: an imminent public health and safety threat, an Ellis Act eviction, or a government order to vacate the building. Tenants are protected from ALL other evictions. In addition, late payment fines, fees, and interests are prohibited. And, any landlord action contrary to the moratorium can be penalized by a fine of $1000 per violation, as well as a criminal misdemeanor.

Below is some important information and resources you can pass on to clients or residents that need rental assistance or legal aid:

Rental Assistance

Currently available for past due and future rent, as well as utility bills (including internet) through the CA Covid-19 Rent Relief Program. Applicants will be asked to submit some documents depending on their application (may be documents/information like lease agreement, due balance letter, proof of income, utility bills, landlord contact information). Please note that some sub-leasing tenants may not be eligible without a rental agreement.

  • Complete Eligibility questions/begin an application: English  Spanish
  • Set up an appointment for assistance (online application is only in English):
