Beautiful clean neighborhoods are essential to the well-being of our community! Which is why we organize dozens of work parties throughout the year.
Last month, The Fruitvale Business Improvement District (BID) organized a work party followed by a celebration to commemorate the legacy of Cesar Chavez. People of all ages and backgrounds participated in the event. Neighbors, local business owners, Unity Council’s staff, Oakland Youth Engaged and Latino Men & Boys students came together early in the morning to clean up and beautify around Fruitvale and Foothill Avenues.

After a morning of picking up trash, pruning trees, weeding, and sweeping the streets, it was time to celebrate! The festivities featured Mariachi and Folklorico performances to bring the Mexican spice to the celebration and special Capoeira and Cambodian dances to celebrate the diversity of the neighborhood.
Don Humberto, Fruitvale resident and owner of Taqueria Reynoso was thrilled about having different ethnic groups perform during the celebration; he told The Unity Council staff, “I had never seen Cambodian dancers, I like that we have different cultures be part of today’s holiday. It brings the neighborhood together.”
We want to thank the following local businesses for making monetary contributions for the performances: Pena Bakery, Rancho Market, Taqueria Reynoso, and Los Arcos Taqueria.
