STEPping Up! From Youth Career Development Client to Full-Time Employee

August 23, 2018

Last year, Daisy visited The Unity Council’s Career Center to help her mom enroll in a computer class. She did not count on enrolling her mom in a class and enrolling herself into the STEP program. STEP offers services for youth and young adults, age 16 to 24, who want help with job search, career exploration, resume and cover letter writing, and other employment services.

At the time of her first visit, Daisy was enrolled in community college, but she did not know what she wanted to study and needed a system to help her explore different career pathways. Her first step was to meet with a Youth Career Coach to talk about her interest, skills, experience, and plans for the future.

Daisy was very interested in administration and the medical industry so her Youth Career Coach suggested she enroll in the Medical Billing Certificate program. As a STEP participant, Daisy received help enrolling in the certificate program and financial assistance to cover costs of the program. Soon after she received her Medical Billing Certificate, Daisy was placed in a paid internship at La Clínica de La Raza. Although she loved the administration side of her internship, she soon realized that the medical industry was not her passion.

After another one-on-one session with her Career Coach, Daisy was placed as an intern in The Unity Council’s Accounting department. The accounting managers and the Director of Finance were very impressed with Daisy’s work. Through the STEPS’ one-on-one coaching sessions, workshops, and previous internship experience Daisy had strengthened her skill set and gained confidence in her communication skills. Daisy’s hard work, attention to detail, and professionalism allowed her to quickly move up from Accounting Intern to Administrative Assistant.

In her role as Administrative Assistant, Daisy assists with billing and accounts payable. She also helps with other tasks as needed and says she loves helping others because it allows her to learn more about the department and develop new skills. Daisy is enrolled in college and is working on getting a degree in Business Administration.
