Itzel Diaz-Romo has dedicated her professional career to serving diverse communities through small and large nonprofits in Oakland; she is passionate about creating public and private partnerships to support an equity agenda, executing communications strategies, and storytelling.
Itzel is currently the Development & Communications Manager at The Unity Council, a nonprofit Social Equity Development Corporation with a 50-year history in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland. Her daily duties included the planning and coordination of departmental activities, including all fundraising efforts, marketing, events, and press. An essential role in her current position is to develop and execute all internal and external communications strategies for the organization. In addition to her daily duties, she acts as the organization’s liaison between departments and outside agencies; including other nonprofit organizations, foundations, community groups, and departments across the City of Oakland. Another essential role she carries is to support the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer with special projects as needed. My work supporting the CEO and COO further developed my executive assistance, communication, and strategic planning skills.
Itzel is active in the community by participating on the board of Friend of Peralta Hacienda Historical Park, a historical park and museum in Oakland that offers arts and culture programming for East Oakland residents.
Itzel was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, and moved to Oakland when she was fifteen years old to be with her full family. She has a Bachelor in Communications Studies from San Francisco State University.
