Youth Employment Programs

Many Oakland teens face considerable challenges to finding their first job or gaining important job skills while finishing high school. Through our Youth Employment Services, we work to help local at-risk, probation, and foster care youth ages 14-21 find their first job. Our counselors work with them to gain job readiness skills, remain focused on degree completion, and make meaningful connections with their community. We connect youth to paid internships and first-time employment opportunities throughout the community.

Youth accepted to the program will be assigned a Youth Employment Counselor who will provide individualized attention to the youth’s long-term goals and aspirations that will lead them down the path towards a successful career. Our Training Programs focus on building the youth’s skills through:

  • Career Exploration
  • Personalized Plans
  • Hands-on Experience
  • Community Service
  • Team Projects

Youth will also use their knowledge to obtain employment, internships, or apply to college with the assistance from their Youth Employment Counselor.

Our Youth Employment Services operates three programs:

  • ¡OYE! Oakland Youth Engaged
  • Work 2 Acheive
  • Mayor’s Summer Job Program

Other youth programs at The Unity Council:

  • Latino Men & Boys– A school based mentorship program working out of 5 Oakland schools. Young men in the program receive academic support, job training and internship opportunities, and healthy lifestyle education.
  • AmeriCorps– Join The Unity Council family as an AmeriCorps member! Gain hands on work experience, give back to your community, and earn an academic award to be used for college costs at the end of your year of service.

Are you an employer who wants to make a positive impact in the life of an Oakland youth?

You can host a youth at your business! Help them gain valuable work experience and build great working habits for the future.

How the internship Works:

Selected internship sites must commit to participating between 4-6 weeks.  We have two employment cycles.  The first cycle begins July 8th and the second begins on July 22nd.  Prior to the internship, the youth will participate in a rigorous two week job training to prepare them for their on-the-job experiences.  Once they complete the training, they will be assigned their worksite.  Site supervisors will be engaged in challenging youth to become more independent and understand the value of a good day’s work.  An hourly wage or stipend is given to the interns by our Youth Employment Services Program based on their attendance and participation at your worksite.

The Employer Application Process is Easy:

  1. Submit an application
  2. Be accepted into the program
  3. Sign Worksite Agreement
  4. Attend a mandatory supervisor orientation
  5. Youth begin their internships at your worksite
